    MLK notices and documents

    Attention 6th grade parents… By California law all incoming 7thgraders are required to show definitive proof of immunization (TDAP) before they can attend 7th grade.  This shot must have been given on or after age 7.  Your incoming 7th grader will not be allowed to register for the 2019-2020 school year without proof.  Some students may have already got the shot, but have not shown the proof to the Health Office.  Please have your 6thgrader present their updated immunization record to the Health Office before the end of this school year. If your student has not received the TDAP yet, please make an appointment NOW to get it.  This way you will prevent your student from being excluded from registering at Lion Camp in August.  Please call the Health Office if you have any questions, 760-901-8821.

    Testing Notice- Please read the Statewide Testing Notice (available in English and Spanish).  If you wish to opt your student out of Statewide Testing, please submit this form to the front office.

    King Middle School recognized as a Common Sense Certified School:
    Digital Citizenship

    Oceanside, CA – Common Sense, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of digital media and technology, has recognized King Middle School  as a Common Sense Certified School: Digital Citizenship.

    King Middle School has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing its students to use the immense power of digital media to explore, create, connect, and learn, while limiting the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying.

    "We applaud the faculty and staff of King Middle School  for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students' education," said Jessica Lindl, Head of Common Sense Education. "King deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large."

    King has been using Common Sense Education's innovative and research-based digital citizenship resources, which were created in collaboration with Dr. Howard Gardner of the GoodPlay Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The resources teach students, educators, and parents tangible skills related to Internet safety, protecting online reputations and personal privacy, managing online relationships, and respecting creative copyright. The free resources are currently used in more than 90,000 classrooms nationwide.

    "We're honored to be recognized as a Common Sense Digital Citizenship Certified School," said Greg Smedley "By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them unlimited opportunities to maximize and personalize their learning."

    Make Money for King every time you Grocery Shop!!

    Dear Parents and Staff,

    Here is an easy way for our school to make money, and it doesn't cost you a thing!  We all have to eat, so we are asking you to register your Ralph's grocery store cards (and Von's, Macy's, or other participating merchant cards ~ see the Escrip merchant list).  Tell everyone you know to register theirs as well.  All you have to do is take a few minutes to register, then use your cards when you shop!!!

    OPD Traffic News

    trafficOPD officers are in the area of the school at both drop off and dismissal times in an effort to ensure the safe travel of all students.  Please abide by the traffic laws and posted zones, show respect for school staff, and be courteous drivers.  The safety of all of the children is our primary concern. 

    • The bike lane was modified along Mesa Drive to allow for more parking along the north side of the road.  This parking area is not being used and is available to ease drop off and pick up of students.  This is a less congested alternative to the busy MLK park parking lots. 
    • The “right turn on red” ability from westbound Mesa to northbound Via Rancho is now restricted during student drop off times.  Violations will be enforced, and tickets will be issued. 
    • Please respect the red curb lines and do not park there to pick up or drop off a student.  This includes the driveways to the church.
    • Please respect the direction of school security staff as they try to assist students in using the crosswalks.  Do not block the crosswalks.  Additional crosswalks have been added on the access streets near the school.  Tickets may be issued any time you are blocking a crosswalk.

    We are also continuing to get reports of parents dropping off their students in the middle of traffic and kids running between vehicles!  This creates a very unsafe situation and a student will be hurt.

    District Absence Procedures

    Attention Parents:

    The OUSD Board of Education amended administrative regulation 5113(a) effective August 26th, 2014 regarding student absences. The policy now reads, "Absences must be cleared within 5 school days after the student returns to school."  

    In accordance with this new policy, please make sure that you clear your student's absence within five (5) school days after their return. To report your child's absence please call our attendance line at 760-901-8801. Just a reminder in order to excuse your child's tardy it must be for medical reasons.

    Monthly Newsletter

    Principal Smedley is very excited to provide the monthly Middle Years News Letter for parents.

    The purpose of the newsletter is to show parents how to improve their children's school success- and behavior-during the middle years. 

    Middle grade children go through dramatic changes and desperately need their parents’ support. Many parents want to help, but aren’t sure what to do. With Middle Years, this will provide you with articles that will help:

    • understand their middle graders’ behavior
    • build respect, responsibility, empathy, and more
    • support homework and study skills
    • stay involved—middle-school style
    • set age-appropriate rules and expectations
    • promote health and safety
    • emphasize the importance of education
